What is the Digital to Analog Broadcast TV Conversion?

The federal government has mandated that "high power" television stations in the U.S. stop broadcasting in the old NTSC Analog Television Broadcast format which was effectively developed in the 1930's, and transition over to the new ATSC Digital Broadcast format.

*** Low power TV stations and translators (repeaters) are not required to transition to digital transmissions at this time, which is why it may be important to purchase a converter box with Analog signal pass-through.

Locally, as of June 2008 all of our local high power stations (Chico Redding Area) are already transmitting in the new digital format. Though some may still be working to improve the performance (in a variety of aspects) of their digital transmissions.

When will analog broadcasts stop?

NTSC Analog Television Broadcasts of designated high power stations are currently scheduled to stop on February 17,  2009 but you don't have to wait until then to start enjoying the improved picture quality of digital television!

Who does this effect?

Over 88% of U.S. Households use Cable or Satellite and will be largely unaffected by this switch to Digital Broadcasting.
Most of the remainder of U.S. TV households rely on over-the-air analog TV (local terrestrial antennas).

Some number of these households do not yet have the ability to receive and process the new ATSC Digital Broadcasts and are receiving the old NTSC Analog Television Broadcasts.

If your household does not have the ability to receive/process the new ATSC Digital Broadcasts and you wish to do so, there are generally 3 options:

  1. Purchase a TV equipped with an ATSC (digital broadcast) tuner.
  2. Subscribe to Cable or Satellite service.
  3. Purchase a digital-to-analog converter box with the help of a government issued $40 coupon.
