RESIDENTS ROAR AT APRIL 1 RALLY:

‘DON’T BE FOOLISH’

ABOUT MANZANITA WIDENING --

SUPPORT PLAN ‘B’

Residents’ groups will again roar into action with an April Fool’s Day rally Monday, April 1 at 5pm, at Hooker Oak Recreation Area, in support of the Manzanita-by-the-Park Neighborhood Plan ‘B’ for the widening of Manzanita Avenue.

On Arbor Day they “tied a yellow ribbon” round the 99 stately trees slated for removal by the 3- and 4-lane plans conceived by the Public Works Department to point up the fact that Neighborhood Plan ‘B’ would spare all 99 trees.

Now, on April Fool’s Day, they will be wearing jester hats and doing street theatre to tell the City Council, who will hold a public hearing on the widening project on May 7th, that the other plans are “foolish:

l      CUT 99 TREES? THAT’S FOOLISH

l      9 STOPLIGHTS IN 1-1/2 MILES? THAT’S FOOLISH

l      BULLDOZE HOMES? THAT’S FOOLISH

l      WASTE $8 MILLION? THAT’S FOOLISH

To local residents, Plan ‘B’ seems like a ‘no-brainer.’ Not only would it save the trees, it would cost only $750,000 versus the $3.7 -$9.3 million for city Plans 2, 3 and 4.

Plan ‘B’ proposes leaving Manzanita as a 2-lane scenic road through Bidwell Park, with innovative 100-foot roundabouts at Vallombrosa and Hooker Oak Avenue and left turn pockets at Centennial. It provides many benefits:

The Chico City Council will hold a full public hearing on all Manzanita corridor plans on May 7, 2002. All members of the community are encouraged to attend and to make their views known to the Council members.
