Why would I need to connect a phone line to my DBS (DISH Network/DirecTV) Receiver:

In general you do not need to connect your receiver to a phone line for "basic" programming packages, premium movie channels, etc.

Phone line: A typical land based phone line. Not a cellular phone line. 

Normally in a home situation, the receiver will dial out (when the line is not in use) just a few times each month. The call is to a Toll Free number, lasting only a few seconds. Normally you would never be inconvenienced or even notice this function of your receiver. During the call, your receiver downloads Pay Per View purchases that you have made (if any), and in some cases (below) the number that the receiver is dialing from is logged. 

Currently we can think of the following reasons why you might want to connect your DBS receiver to your phone line:

1) Pay Per View (PPV) movie and event access. Without a phone connection a DBS receiver may disallow PPV purchases. Or may store some number of purchases, and then download those purchases when the receiver is eventually connected to a phone line.

DirecTV & DISH Network have begun to offer PPV ordering thru an 800 number, so that those without phone line connection can order PPV events (additional charge per order). Contact DirecTV/DISH Network for details.

2) Professional Sports Packages & Channels. Currently most if not all of the professional sports packages offered by DirecTV require permanent connection to a phone line. We believe that DirecTV wants to verify that your "Physical Location" on record matches the phone number that the receiver is dialing from to verify that the receiver is physically where DirecTV believes it is, so that any blackouts are properly applied.

3) Some special functions or features such as WebTV access, e-mail, interactive features, etc, may require a phone line connection. 

4) Some specials/promotions may require at least an initial period of phone line connection.

Contact satellite signal providers for more information (E.G.: DISH Network, DirecTV, et al) about the restrictions/conditions placed upon the delivery of their signals, and their specific subscriber agreements, and specifically when they might require a phone line connection. And realize that those rules/requirements are subject to change by the signal providers without notice. See equipment manufacturers regarding their products and which products and features may require a phone line for proper operation.
